Learning the basics of Twitter is critical to any business that wants to tap the power of online social media. In just a very short time, businesses large and small are finding ways to integrate Twitter into their marketing efforts. It was good news, when Twitter announced that their implementing video posts on their platform. Therefore, now we're able to post varieties of corporates or commercial video to boost our business. And when they do, they are finding that they can sell more products and services by posting some in ways they never imagined. From building brand awareness to raising funds for non-profits, Twitter has proven to be significant in meeting marketing objectives. That’s what makes learning the basics of Twitter so important. Twitter BasicsThe basics of Twitter begin with its purpose — to post short messages (“tweets” as they are called) of 140 characters or less for anyone and everyone to read. Sounds simple enough. And to most people, it probably doesn’t sound particularly useful. But in a very short time, Twitter has become a tool that quickly spreads information around the corner or around the world in an instant, all the while building communities of individuals who share a common interest. As a result, Twitter is able to connect people with one another at deeper, more meaningful levels. This is why Twitter has quickly risen to the top of the heap in online social marketing. Among the more basic usages of Twitter is to distribute short bursts of information about your business. It could be a brief blurb about a new product, or a link to a longer announcement about a special offer just for Twitter users who follow your company’s tweets. Some have used Twitter to conduct an online contest. There are many possibilities, thanks to Twitter’s tremendous flexibility and a seemingly endless supply of people who like following tweets. It’s all about relevance!Perhaps the most important thing to remember when applying the basics of Twitter is relevance. Your Twitter program needs to be relevant to followers of your tweets; these are your customers or potential customers. Remember that they don’t want to be sold something. They want to engage in a conversation. This is critical. If you try too hard to do nothing but sell with your tweets you can quickly turn people off and they will stop following your Twitter posts. But if you plan carefully and use Twitter as a communications channel for connecting with customers and giving them the opportunity to be part of the discussion, you will go a long way to winning them over and eventually winning at the cash register. Twitter Do’s and Dont’sHaving now used Twitter for some months we thought we would share with you our Twitter Do’s and Dont’s as well as the suggestion for some useful applications etc. DO – Use a Twitter Client You’ll very quickly realize that using the normal Twitter web interface is quite cumbersome and you’ll find it very difficult to keep up with people you are following. Thankfully there are a number of the Twitter client available that really do improve the experience. Our favourite and the one we use is Tweetdeck which does seem very popular. It has many great features and we hope to be bringing you an article soon reviewing some of the best Twitter clients Another popular one is Twhirl and there are also a number of other clients available for things like the iPhone and the Blackberry etc. DONT – Use Auto follow and Auto DM People’s opinions vary on these two aspects but for me, I think to get the best value out of Twitter you should only be following people who you find interesting to either yourself or your business. I don't buy that it’s a numbers game at all and don't really see why people need to follow 10,000+ people! I have the same opinion of Auto DM (Direct Messaging), I can see why some people set up a nice little welcome DM when you start to follow them but many Twitter users are now abusing the facility to the extent that Auto DM’s now annoy people. Again bear in mind it’s only my opinion DO – Fill in your Twitter ProfileI actually get quite annoyed when someone follows me and then when I go to check them out on Twitter to see if I want to follow them back their profile is blank! Personally speaking, I won't follow anyone where their profile is blank. That profile is a chance to show people what you are all about and what they can get out of following you. Some people even put a link on this page to a whole page on their site that tells people more about their Twitter goals etc.
DONT – Retweet all and sundry! The retweet in Twitter is used as a way of tweeting other people's messages whilst still showing who the original message is from. It’s important that you only retweet things that you find interesting and that your followers will find interesting (you can mix it with a bit of humour as well ). DO – ReciprocateWhen people retweet your messages or pay you a compliment it’s always nice to fire off a little thank you. It’s little things like that that can go a long way to establishing relationships. Remember you have the potential of reaching massive amounts of people through the people that follow you. I’ve actually followed people purely as a result of someone else saying they are great people to follow. Before I finish this post I wanted to also mention Nikki Pilkington’s Tweetmentor. I’ve not been asked to do this but her little course on how to get the best out of Twitter is really very good. You basically get an email every day for 100 days with lots of tips and tricks for Twitter. Please do check it out! Let me start by saying that I am not a fan of resolutions. You should really be evaluating and changing course on a regular basis. Having said that, I do want to ask you to add one thing to your to-do list in 2020 that isn’t a resolution: improve your website’s user experience in the new year. Your website is your 24/7 sales force. Even if you’re mostly an offline business, consumers are feeling more and more comfortable with completing transactions online. More importantly, consumers are looking to Google and others in their social network for recommendations, and of course, from there a browser heads to a website to follow-up the recommendation with more information. Will that browser becomes a buyer based on what they see? Consider:
Easy Tips and TweaksDon’t panic – it isn’t a hopeless battle. Here’s a wee checklist you can use to check if there are improvements you can make to your site, making browsers more comfortable and turning them into buyers.
Those are a few things to get you started. But really, the best way to know how your site is working is to ask. No, not one of your staff or someone who’s worked on the site before. Preferably a customer – especially one who hasn’t used the site much, so you can watch them as they go and understand how they navigate. If you can’t get a good test with a customer on the site, pay someone else to do it. Sometimes you are too close. Similar to how stores have secret shoppers when you are too close to something you might miss the things that are causing the most problems are too obvious. Haven’t you been to a website recently and thought Hmmm. I don’t get it. It happens a lot. As consumers become more and more comfortable with online technology, small businesses who “get it” will make their sites better and better and reap the rewards for it. Those sites that don’t speak to their customer and don’t make the experience easy for those consumers to do business with them will fall behind. Simple as that. If there’s one thing a business can’t survive without, it’s cold, hard cash, and too much financial analysis’s cash-flow is the biggest indicator of a business’ health and viability. Unfortunately, many startups don’t manage their cash-flow properly, and as a result, 44% of new businesses find themselves close to closure by year 3. The first lesson; if your business is hemorrhaging cash, chucking more cash at it isn’t going to fix the situation – it’s just going to make a bigger mess. The trick is to figure out where in your supply chain the wound is and to close it. Follow your goodsThe faster you get your product or service to your consumer, the quicker your consumer will put cash in your hands. You need to look at the entire process, from the second you get the sale through to the moment the invoice is sent out.
An SME owner must know how much is being sold at any given minute. And yesterday. And how much is going to go out today, and this week. Every item that’s on the shelf is money sitting there unused, and turning that product into sales is what will get your business growing. The more accurate your sales predictions, the better you can minimize waste resources. Once your predictive modelling is sorted and your resource pipeline is as close to accurate as possible, your next focus is meeting the sales demand. What happens when a customer makes an order? If it is a long, manual process that delays customer receipt, how can you streamline it? Technology? Training? Or, most often a combination of the two? This also includes delivery. For physical goods, the cheapest form of transport is the slowest, in many instances meaning the cost of the delay is greater than the pennies saved. Remember, there’s more to a successful business than the pure profit margin. This is a dilemma that has relevance to many service-based businesses, including my own and some of my existing clients. It was mentioned recently in an email newsletter I received, and as I am in the middle of rebranding my own site just now I thought I would look into the pros and cons in more detail. This is a decision that many businesses find hard to make, especially when put on the spot by a web designer such as myself. Having spent some time digging around the internet for forum threads and articles on the subject I have discovered just how much opinions on this vary from person to person. While I can’t give you the definitive answer, hopefully, I will give you some useful points to consider. Show me the money…Those in favour of displaying prices make some valid points well worth bearing in mind. It can be used as a method of pre-qualifying potential customers before they even contact you, which in some cases may save you (and the customer) a lot of wasted time. In my line of work where I will spend a number of hours putting together a proposal document or drafting up some designs, knowing that the person at the other end is aware of the potential price tag eliminates any nasty surprise when they receive the quote. A good analogy would be, if you’ve ever sold your car privately you will know how frustrating it can be dealing with tyre kickers! Another way of looking at it is that it can be an effective form of bait. For example, a ‘prices starting at’ type statement when used in as honest a way as possible, can lead a visitor to pick up the phone or fill in your contact form if it fits within their budget. Once the statement has provided the first communication it falls down to you to explain your pricing structure at the appropriate time. It should be stressed though that it is not worth stating ‘prices starting at $200’ just to grab attention knowing full well the price would be closer to $1000, this will only succeed in losing a sale and gaining a bad reputation. Keep it to yourself…The nature of the beast that is a service-based business is the flexibility in which jobs are quoted for. I for example may be able to design, build and launch a website with tens of pages and fancy features in a few days, whereas another three-page site could take longer depending on the specifics of what is required! If I were to say ‘buy a website for $300’ on my site I would be nailing my own coffin shut. With no two jobs being the same it stands to reason that no two prices will be either. Rather than be accused of misleading people, you retain the ability to price per job at a rate suitable to the specifics involved. The reverse of one of the statements for showing prices can also be seen as a benefit to some, in that by not having prices shown you may in fact receive more requests for information. People who are eager to find a good deal will have to get in touch to find out where you sit against your competitors. If your business does not require lengthy procedures like writing proposals, this really can work in your favour. A point to note…It was more than apparent that many people participating in online discussions around this topic would, as customers, not make any contact with a company without prices shown as it must mean they are expensive! I can see the logic in this one although I don’t wholeheartedly agree personally, it would depend on the type of service I was looking for on how I would form my opinions. In summary…There really is no right or wrong answer to this dilemma; as there are numerous factors that may have an impact on the overall result. What is important is that you give the decision the attention it deserves, and analyze the response to any changes in strategy. Put yourself in the position of a potential customer visiting your site for the first time, how the site looks and feels, the quality of the content and information available and give that all-important ‘call to action’. If nothing else this exercise gives you an opportunity to step back and evaluate how well your site represents your business, and identify any areas that could be polished up a bit – but we all do that regularly anyway, don’t we?
Well, we finally made the switch over to another host. This blog had been run on a different host that I had been having some major problems with. When you suffer downtime more than once a week while you’re in the middle of a post-it can get just a little frustrating. It was to the point where it was actually slowing down the posting on this blog. Sometimes a bad host can ruin your plans to get work done. Nevertheless, we have made the switch.
What did we all learn from this little lesson? Well we learned that time is money, money is time, that whole saying. In doing business online this is more important than ever to remember. The thing about your host or server is that it’s working for you all day and all night long. You would think it would need to take a break, as my old host did very often, but computers don’t need sleep. Computers just need a little upgrade here and there to make sure everything is running smoothly. When you think about this in business terms, I have absolutely no idea how many people came to this blog while it was down. I have no idea how many possible readers we lost because of this. What host are you using? Are they keeping your most important sites up and running 24/7? The world never stops searching for information and if your host is down when people are searching for what would be your product, you’re out of luck. This is just something we had to address, took the time to do so and now it’s finished. Hopefully, I will have much better luck with this host as they seem to have very happy customers all over the web. The best thing about doing business on the internet is that the computers do the work for you. You just have to make sure that your host isn’t taking too many breaks along the way. We will see how this host pans out, I will keep you all informed. What do Darren Rowse and Google have in common? Anyone that has heard of Darren knows that he runs the ultra-popular problogger.net. Darren’s site gets a ton of traffic and has an RSS readership of over 25,000 according to Feedburner. Anyone that knows much about Google knows that they own Blogger.com.
What does this have to do with anything? Because Blogger.com has a high authority level they can easily rank for the term “blogger” and they also easily rank for the term “pro blogger.” For no apparent reason other than the small amount of traffic that the term pro blogger generates, Google has chosen to use the subdomain “pro” making their domain “pro.blogger.com.” Google takes this traffic and directs it through to the Google search page. Here is the pro.blogger.com page: Why would Google need the domain “pro.blogger.com”? Not to mention what does the term “pro blogger” have to do with the google search page? Google is manipulating its search rankings for the term “pro blogger.” Even after all their talk about search engine manipulation, Google gets caught with their hands in the search manipulation cookie jar. I thought the content needed to be relevant, Google. If you were to search for Pro Blogger on Yahoo.com the first link it gives you is the Google search page pro.blogger.com while problogger.net is number two: If you were to search for Pro Blogger on Yahoo.com the third link it gives you is the Google search page pro.blogger.com while problogger.net is actually number one: While Google has recently been on the hunt for people that manipulate their search engine rankings by buying uplinks, they forgot to look out for their own search manipulation tactics. Should Google send themselves a blacklist warning? What happens if they don’t comply? Let’s face it, business is what makes the world go around. If I had a place to put all of the business ideas I had for everyone to vote on maybe it would generate some traffic. Oh, look, another business idea. That’s my point, business ideas are a dime a dozen and if you have what you believe is a unique idea, you better believe that someone else has already thought of it.
The good thing here is that just because someone has thought of a great business idea, doesn’t mean that they’re going to implement this idea. If they have already implemented this idea it also doesn’t mean that they’ve done things better than you can. Just look at the search industry as an example. Who’s on top of the search game now? This is what makes the internet unique as anyone from anywhere in the world has the chance to make a favourable impression on the business world with one unique idea. The internet is an open forum for business ideas with people voting on your product every day by how often they visit or use your site. Speaking of visits to a site, I had a few ideas to give this blog a boost in traffic when I started blogging. The good thing is that I have not abandoned all of these ideas. I will still use most of the ideas, but I have decided that they are better suited for a later date and time. Some very nice informational posts will be coming your way very soon. Timing is everything and timing can be a valuable business tool, especially when it comes to marketing and promotion of websites. Has everyone seen the commotion over what has happened to John Chow (JohnChow.com) and Text-Link-Ads.com? Since I used to read his business blog, I was going to do a post on John Chow and how he is going down the wrong path, but I decided against it. It was just going to be evil anyhow. Speaking of “evil”, John Chow can’t even rank for his own name on Google anymore. Google has knocked his block off, at least in their search results. It’s a good thing for John Chow that the majority of his traffic comes from sources other than Google. He’s always said, “don’t put all your eggs in the Google basket.” That’s never been more true for him than right now.
John Chow will have to come to the realization that Google can play games too. For months John had been accepting reviews of his site, in return giving you a “link back from a PR 6 site,” a tactic that this business blog will not partake in. Oh, let’s not forget that John also uses text link ads to sell horribly unrelated links on his front page. If you break Google’s rules they will slam you as hard as they can. Google basically got tired of John trying to pimp their page rank, so they knocked him around a bit and put the Google boot (size XXXL) where the sun doesn’t shine. On top of the fact that John Chow can’t even rank on page one for his own name, he can’t rank for his favorite search term “make money online” either. They put a little hurt on John Chow but the publicity he will get from this whole thing will probably just help him. On top of that, Text-Link-Ads.com isn’t even ranking for the term “text link ads.” Wow, when Google says they don’t approve of people buying or selling links, what they really mean is they will kick you down their search results. What I did notice is that text-link-ads.com does have a little ad campaign going with Google, they happen to occupy the top spot. They can still buy links from Google apparently. What’s going to happen to the link buying industry? If Google has any say in it, the whole “text link ads” business model will just go away completely and sites like John Chow will go down in flames. Is this the new definition of “Google Bomb?” Dear Corporate America,
I’ve been meaning to send you this letter for quite a while now. Every time I hear a “corporate type” talk about the youth of today, I want to pull them aside and explain a few things, so here we go. I would like to take the time to inform you of all the valuable talent that you're missing out on. While you’re concerned that “young people just don’t have any loyalty anymore,” you haven’t bothered to take a look at why this is. While you’re busy hiring talented college graduates, you fail to put them to any good use. In fact, you’re scared that they might know more than you by their second day of work, rendering you useless. Well, guess what, we want to be put to use, we want to work hard and we want to belong to something bigger than we are. This is why we took the job in the first place, right. Unfortunately, we’ve been let down far too many times by far too many mediocre companies. If we wanted to push papers across a desk we could stay at home. The problem is, if you sit at home you don’t get paid, so talent goes to waste at work instead. It’s not that young people today are not loyal, it’s that they are not properly challenged. So remember that while our grandparents put in thirty years at the office without raising an eyebrow, the young adults of today have a choice. More than ever are choosing to work for themselves. Whatever it takes is the motto of today’s young people. Even if we have to live out of a van down by the river for the next two years while we get on our feet, it’s much better than working at your lousy company for 2 weeks. There are exceptions out there, there are great companies that breed talent. These are few and far between. Good luck with your next hiring spree corporate America. Here’s a hint, if you can’t provide a community that fosters creativity and unity you will be conducting these hiring sprees for years to come. Stop using the words “work ethic” when you’re unable to provide a creative environment for employees to prosper. Stop over-promising and under-producing, and loyalty will find you. |
